Activate image citations

This step-by-step guide shows you how to display images in your agent's responses when image-based citations are present.

Image citation

Image citation replaces the first inline citation in a response with the related image. This helps make answers more visual and easier to understand.

When this option is enabled:

  • If the response includes an inline citation linked to an image, the image will be shown directly below the first paragraph where the citation appears.
  • The first citation will be replaced by the image. Other instances of the same citation will remain unchanged.
  • The image appears only if it was used to generate the response.

Activate image citations

  1. Go to your agent and click Personalize.
  1. Navigate to the Citations tab.
  1. Under Citation Types, enable Numbered references (inline citations).
  1. Toggle on Render image citations inline.
  1. Scroll down to Limit the height of image citation. (Recommended to keep your chat area clean and readable.)
Step 2 - Limit height option
  1. Once the toggle is on, set Maximum images per response - choose how many image previews can appear in a single response: 1, 2, 3, or Unlimited.
📘

This setting controls how many image previews are rendered in a single agent response. If a response cites more sources than the selected limit, only the first images are shown as previews. The rest fall back to numbered references.

Use a lower limit if your agent is primarily used on mobile, or if responses tend to cite many sources.

  1. Click Save Settings to enable the feature.
📘

Note:

  • When enabled, images resize to fit the chat bubble width while maintaining proper proportions (1.91:1 ratio).
  • This feature is available on all plans.
