Auto-generated personas

This guide explains how CustomGPT automatically creates a default persona when you build a new agent using a sitemap or an URL.

How it works

When a new agent is created using a sitemap or an URL, CustomGPT automatically generates a default persona based on the websiteโ€™s content. This helps ensure your agent acts in a way that reflects the tone and purpose of the source material.

We use content from the following pages to build the persona:

  • Home page
  • About Us page
  • One additional randomly selected page

If a valid home page is detected, your agent will start with a tailored persona based on the siteโ€™s core messaging. If not, you can manually define or adjust the persona from Personalize > Persona.

Why was persona not generated for my agent

A persona will not be auto-generated if the home page cannot be clearly identified. This typically happens in the following cases:

  • The website uses a non-standard home page URL (Only domain.com/, domain.com/index.*, or domain.com/home are accepted)
  • A free sitemap tool was used to generate a list of unrelated or random URLs
  • A third-party sitemap is used that doesnโ€™t include the home page
  • The sitemap was built from non-website sources, such as podcasts
  • A sub-sitemap was provided that does not contain the siteโ€™s root or home page
  • The agent was built using a specific page URL instead of the home page (e.g., a URL with additional /paths/ like domain.com/blog/article-name)
