Customize PDF behavior with instant viewer
This guide explains how to adjust how PDFs are displayed to users when your agent references them in a response.
What is the Instant Viewer?
The Instant Viewer allows your agent to display PDF content directly inside the chat. When a response includes a citation from a PDF, the viewer can open automatically or remain hidden until a user interacts with it. You can also control whether users are allowed to open or download the original PDF file.
If you haven’t enabled the Instant Viewer yet, see Instant Viewer: Add instant viewer to your website.
Customize how Instant Viewer behaves
Once the Instant Viewer is enabled, you can control how it appears and how users interact with cited PDFs.
Open automatically
This setting determines when the PDF viewer opens during a conversation.
- Enabled (default): The PDF viewer opens automatically whenever a PDF is used to generate the agent’s response. This helps users immediately see the referenced content without extra clicks.
- Disabled: The PDF viewer opens only when a user clicks a cited PDF in the Sources list. This keeps the interface cleaner and gives users control over when to view source material.
Anonymize PDFs
This setting controls whether users can access the original PDF file.
- Enabled: Users cannot click cited PDFs in the Sources list to open them in a new tab or download them. This protects sensitive files from being shared or accessed outside the chat.
- Disabled (default): Users can click any cited PDF to open it in a new tab or download it. This allows them to review referenced material directly.
How to configure it
- On your CustomGPT dashboard, click the three dots menu and click Deploy.
- On the deploy page, open the Advanced tab.
- In the Instant Viewer section, click the three dots menu.
- Click Settings.
- Adjust the Open automatically and Anonymize PDFs options.
- Click Save settings to apply your changes.
- Click Try it out! to test the PDF viewer and chat interface. If PDFs are used as sources, the viewer displays them with relevant sections highlighted.
