What is KB Doc Analyst?
KB Doc Analyst is an agentic action that lets your agent read and analyze a specific document from its knowledge base - not just search it.
With regular knowledge base search, the agent retrieves relevant chunks from across your documents and uses them to generate a response. KB Doc Analyst works differently: when a user asks about a specific document, the agent locates that document in the knowledge base and reads the full content, producing a detailed, document-level response.
How it differs from Document Analyst
Document Analyst analyzes files that end users upload during a conversation.
KB Doc Analyst analyzes files that are already in the agent's knowledge base. No upload is needed - users reference a document by name, and the agent retrieves and reads it directly.
Both actions share the same analysis flow and cost the same number of additional queries per use.
How it differs from knowledge base search
Standard knowledge base search retrieves the most relevant chunks from across all your documents. It is optimized for broad questions where the answer could be anywhere in the knowledge base.
KB Doc Analyst is for when the user wants to go deep on a specific document. Instead of retrieving fragments, the agent reads the document end to end and produces a thorough response based on its full content.
When to use it
KB Doc Analyst is most useful when:
- Users need a summary, overview, or executive briefing of a specific document
- A previous response cited a document and the user wants to explore it further
- The answer requires understanding the full context of a document, not just a relevant section
Example prompts:
- "Give me the executive summary of the August Report from your knowledge base."
- "You mentioned The Great Research.pdf - can you tell me more about it?"
- "Walk me through the key findings in the Q3 analysis."
How it works
When KB Doc Analyst is enabled, the agent detects when a user references a specific knowledge base document, locates it, and analyzes it using the same flow as Document Analyst.
If the agent cannot find the referenced document, it tells the user and asks for clarification.
Availability
KB Doc Analyst is available on Standard, Premium, and Enterprise plans. The feature must be enabled on each agent where you want to use it.
Current limitations
KB Doc Analyst cannot be used in combination with other agentic actions in the same response.
