How citations from external sources work
This guide explains how citations look when your agent's answer comes from an external source like Web Search, instead of your knowledge base.
When your agent answers using your knowledge base, its citations point back to your own documents. When it answers using an external source instead, its citations are marked so users can tell the two apart.
Citations still use the same formats
Your agent already shows citations as classic citations (displayed at the end of the response) or numbered citations (in-text numbered references that point to citation sources), or both. These same two formats apply to external-source citations too - there's nothing new to configure. Refer to Change how citations are displayed to control which formats are on.
What's different for an external source
When the answer draws on an external source, that citation is marked as external, and shows the source's title, URL, description, and icon, when available.
Where this applies
This currently applies to Web Search results only, and works on any agent. There's no separate setting to turn the marking on - if your agent already has citations enabled, it appears automatically whenever it answers using Web Search.
